Looking for a veggie alternative to rawhide then sweet potato could be for your dog. Dried sweet potato treats are a sweet, one ingredient treat easy to make for your dog, that can either be a crisp snack or a tasty chew. Sweet potatoes also provide your dog with vitamins A, B6 and C as well as Iron and Potassium. Don't over feed your dog sweet potato though as they contain a lot of starch which could lead to weight gain.
What you need:
- Large sweet potatoes (washed and dried)
- baking paper
Preheat your oven to the lowest possible setting this should be about 250°F / 121°C / gas mark 1/2. Slice the top off your washed, peeled and dried sweet potato to give you a level surface. Carefully slice the potato into slices approx. 1/3 inch thick, the thicker the slices the chewier the treat, however you can slice thinly to make a crisp snack. remember that the slices will turn out slightly thinner when they are dried. You can leave the skin on.
Place the slices on to lined trays leaving a little room in between each slice. Bake for approx. 2 hours depending on the thickness of slice. Turn over chews and bake the other side for another two hours. You can bake for a shorter time to produce softer treats or longer for tougher treats. The slices will darken and shrivel in the oven but make sure you don't burn them. To make them a little bit tougher you can leave the slices in the turned off oven overnight.
Keep any that don't get eaten straight away in an air tight container where they should keep for up to a week but check before feeding your dogs that these natural treats haven't gone mouldy.
